FHN Presenting Alcohol Server Awareness Program June 22

FREEPORT, Ill., June 2, 2009 — Alcohol servers are an important part of stopping drunk driving and teenage drinking. A number of area agencies are sponsoring two free alcohol server awareness programs in Jo Daviess County June 22.

The programs are scheduled for 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 22 at Boone’s Place, 515 Main Street (second floor), Galena and from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. the same day at Antny’s, 211 North Avenue, Stockton. Both programs will be the same; participants may attend either session.

Each program will review detection of false IDs from the Secretary of State’s office and will focus on ID security, laws and penalties for fake ID use, how to detect fake IDs and what to do when you have detected a fraudulent or fictitious ID. A representative from the Illinois Liquor Control Commission will review proper serving techniques, the consequences of over-serving and answer any questions relating to local ordinances.

Research has shown that the impact of a server program has demonstrated a 35 percent drop in the number of persons having a presumed BAC (blood alcohol content) level of 0.08%, the legally defined level of intoxication. Servers are often the first line of defense against intoxicated drivers.

The programs are sponsored by the Galena Police Department, Jo Daviess Sheriff’s Department, Boone’s Place, Antny’s and FHN Family Counseling Center. Registration is encouraged, but not required. For more information or to register, call Penny Schwark at 815-777-4488.

Nutrition Training Scheduled for June 2009

Join University of Illinois Extension-Stephenson County for a nutrition topic of timely interest.  The potential role of Mediterranean-type diets in correcting some metabolic conditions characteristic of metabolic syndrome will be discussed at an in-service training session for dietitians, home economists, health care professionals, and others interested in the latest research information.  The 2-hour teleconference is scheduled for Thursday, June 18, 2009, starting at 3:30 p.m.

Robert J. Reber, U of I extension specialist in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, will discuss the evolving thinking about a group of metabolic conditions called metabolic syndrome.  This syndrome often precedes the development of type 2 diabetes and other cardiovascular diseases.  Reber will review current research that suggests Mediterranean-type diets hold promise of preventing and/or reversing several of these metabolic conditions.  The diet's effects may occur because of the macronutrient and micronutrient content as well as the phytochemicals these diets contain.

This is the final session in this series co-sponsored by U of I Extension Nutrition and Wellness Development Team and the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Two hours of in-service education credit are available from the American Dietetics Association for dietitians who attend.  A $10 registration fee is required.  For more information about this session, contact University of Illinois Extension-Stephenson County at 815-235-4125.
