Spring Street, Freeport. 9 am to Noon. Participants use wheelchairs, provided by RAMP, to navigate a 2 mile route through downtown Freeport to raise awareness of obstacles faced by people with disabilities and to raise funds for RAMP. FREEPORT, Illinois - The Freeport Art Museum will host its 6th Annual Brats, Beer and Blues Event on Friday, July
31, 2009, in conjunction with Cruise Night and the weekend festivities. This fundraising event will be held on the
grounds of the Freeport Art Museum from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. The event is open to the public. Come sample ales, lagers,
pilsners, and other brews, while enjoying freshly cooked brats. New! This year we are pleased to feature the blues
music of the Barstool Bob Blues Band. View classic and special cars as part of the Art of the Car exhibit in our
parking lot. This event is sponsored by Royal Liquor & Royal Pub West, Inc., Mrs. Mike’s Potato Chips, and Alber’s
Ice Cream Parlor.
“We look forward to this event as an opportunity to celebrate summer with the community. There is nothing like a good
brat and some great blues music, except maybe the cool cars and beer!,” says Jennifer Kirker, Director of the
Museum.
Tickets are $12 for FAM members, $15 for non-members, and $5.00 for children 6-12. Children 5 and under are free.

 4-H General Projects Day
 
University of Illinois Extension-Stephenson County has scheduled 4-H General Projects Day for Wednesday, July 8, 9:00 a.m. to noon.  This event will be held at the Stephenson County Fairgrounds and is open to the public at no charge.
 
4-H members, ages 8 to 19 years of age, will display their project exhibits.  Project categories include: Animal Science displays, Photography, Leadership, Interior Design, Health, Food and Nutrition displays, Visual Arts, Mechanical Sciences, Computer Science, Robotics, Electricity, Environment and Natural Resources, Woodworking, and many more.
 
Conference judging allows 4-H members to discuss their projects with judges.  Blue, red, and white ribbons are awarded according to how closely a project adheres to specified project guidelines and the 4-Her’s  project knowledge and expertise.  Projects are then compared to others in the same category for selection of Champion and Reserve Champion awards.  Some 4-H members will also have their projects selected for exhibit at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield.
 
Come to the Stephenson County Fairgrounds on July 8, 9:00 a.m. to noon to view the many and varied accomplishments of the Stephenson County 4-H members.
 

 
  The tenth annual Freeport Wheel-A-Thon rolls in Saturday, July 25, 2009 to raise awareness and funds for RAMP’s services that empower people with disabilities in Stephenson County. The Wheel-A-Thon will start at the Gospel Outreach Church and Midtown Parking Lot located at 211 West Spring Street in downtown Freeport. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m.

The Wheel-A-Thon is a disability awareness event that works much like a typical walk-a-thon in terms of participants, known as “wheelers,” raise pledges and complete a two mile course using a wheelchair through downtown Freeport. Many local companies have gathered friends, family and co-workers to form teams and raise funds for RAMP. Some of the teams participating include: U.S. Cellular, MetLife and the Young Professional’s Network. It’s not too late to join in on the fun! All participants who raise a minimum of $50 will receive an event T-shirt—raise additional funds and earn Magic Waters admission passes, McDonald’s coupons, 4 Season Bowling passes, Pizza Hut and FS Fast Stop gas cards.

 10 year reunion slated
FREEPORT – The Freeport Senior High School class of 1999 reunion
committee has made plans for their first class reunion. The class will
meet Saturday, July 25, at PJ's Stephenson Street Station, in downtown
Freeport, for snacks and drinks from 7 p.m. to midnight. Invitations
have been sent out. If you, or someone you know, did not recieve one

July Forage Expo:
 
The 2009 Illinois Forage Expo will be held on Friday, July 31 at Meier Farms, 205 North Dakota Road, Ridott, Illinois in Stephenson County.  The Expo will start at 9 am and conclude at 4 pm.  Meier Farms is a family operated 300 head dairy confinement operation with 345 acres of alfalfa.

                The Forage Expo will include field demonstrations of forage harvesting equipment and commercial displays of forage related products and equipment.  In addition, educational sessions will be presented that focus on using autosteer in forage systems, economics of alfalfa production, managing risk with hay insurance and nutrient management planning/how EQIP can help.  Also, Dr Mike Hutjens, University of Illinois Extension dairy specialist will discuss forages and today’s milk price. 

In addition, a Quality Hay & Haylage Contest will be available for producers to enter 2009 harvested bales and haylage.  Entries in the Quality Hay & Haylage Contest must be delivered on site from 9 am to 10 am.  There is no entry fee and NIRS analysis 

will be provided free of charge.  Bales weighing over 100 pounds will need an official scale weigh ticket.  Four hay and one haylage class will be available and class winners will receive a $25 gift certificate.  For further information concerning the Quality Hay/Haylage Contest, interested producers can contact Greg Clark, University of Illinois Extension, Whiteside County, phone 815-772-4075, gmclark@illinois.edu


  Freeport, Illinois – The images that Hollywood has use to depict the Vietnam War will be the topic of a film series to be held at Freeport’s Lindo Theater on Monday and Tuesday, July 6 & 7. “We Were Soldiers,” starring Mel Gibson, will be screened on Monday night at 7:00 PM and “Coming Home,” featuring Jon Voight, will be screened on Tuesday night, also at 7:00 PM. Both films are rated “R.”

After each screening, Alan Wenzel, Highland Community College instructor, will lead a discussion with the audience on the war in Southeast Asia as depicted in the films. “Over the decades, the way that the American film industry has chosen to portray the Vietnam War has evolved,” said Wenzel, who has spent time researching the Vietnam War on film and has taught a course on the subject.

Dr. Edward Finch, director of the Stephenson County Historical Society, will serve as host for the series. The film series is being held in conjunction with “Silent Echoes,” an exhibit of art created by Vietnam veterans that is currently being hosted at the Freeport Art Center. Sponsors for the film series are Highland Community College, the Stephenson County Historical Society, and Classic Cinemas/Lindo Theater. Admission is $2.00 per person.

 4-H Activities at the Stephenson County Fair
 
The Stephenson County Fair is scheduled for July 14-19.  Even before the official start of the fair, 4-H activities will be taking place at the Stephenson County Fairgrounds.  From foods to livestock, horticulture to cats, 4-H members will exhibit many projects at this year’s fair.  Following is a summary of the activities that are planned:
 
Monday, July 13
A full slate of shows begins at 8:30 a.m. with the Dog Show in the Rest & Entertainment Tent.  Judging for Foods and Horticulture projects will take place at 9:00 a.m. in the 4-H Building under the grandstand.  At 9:30 a.m. the 4-H Horse & Pony Show will take place at the southwest show ring.  The 4-H Hose Trail Class will be held at 10:00 a.m. at the southeast show ring.  Cloverbuds who are 5 to 7 years old will have their projects judged in the 4-H Building at 1:00 p.m.
 
In addition to 4-H project judging, the 4-H Cake Walk will take place on Monday at 3:00 p.m. near the Home Ec Building.  Cookies, breads, muffins and candies made by 4-H members will be available.  All proceeds go to the 4-H program.
 
Tuesday, July 14
The day begins with the Goat Show at 8:00 a.m.  The Rabbit, Cavies, and Sheep Shows are at 8:30 a.m.  At 8:45 a.m. the 4-H Poultry Show will take place in the Poultry Barn.  At 9:00 a.m. the 4-H Beef and Swine Shows take place in their respective barns.  The Dairy Show follows at 10:00 a.m.
 
The County 4-H Federation will open its Pizza Hut stand in the 4-H Building on Tuesday.  It will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. through Saturday.  Stop by and have a slice of pizza and some soda or bottled water while spending time at the Fair.  The 4-H Cake Walk will again take place Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.  The 4-H Flower Arranging Contest is a new event at the fair and will be held in the 4-H Building at 5:00 p.m.
 
A fun evening of activities is scheduled for Tuesday’s Youth Night, 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. in the Grandstand.  Activities will include the Queen and Little Miss Pageant, Celebrity Showmanship Contest, Chicken Scratch, Pig and Lamb Scramble, Stephenson County’s Got Talent Contest, and the Tug-of War.
 
Wednesday, July 15
 The Cat Show will be held at 8:30 a.m. in the Rest & Entertainment Tent.  The 4-H Dress Revue where garments will be judged for construction, fit, and appearance will be held in the Rest and Entertainment Tent from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.  This will be followed by 4-Hers In Action at 4:30 p.m.
 
Thursday, July 16
The Parade of Excellence will be held at 6:00 p.m. in the Rest & Entertainment Tent.  At this event, trophies will be presented to 4-H project winners other than livestock.  The livestock winners will receive trophies at their respective shows.
 
Friday, July 17
Throughout the fair, the 4-H clubs will have display booths in the 4-H Building under the grandstand.  Nonperishable foods and hygiene items will also be collected under the grandstand for the 4-H House of Cans booth.  4-H clubs will compete to see which club donates the most based on club size.  Members of the public may also make contributions to the House of Cans.  All items collected will be given to FACC, and the Le-Win, Pearl City, and German Valley food pantries.
 
 
Saturday, July 18
The Junior Livestock Auction begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Swine Show Arena.  During the auction the 4-H Federation will be selling pop, bottled water, coffee, donuts, chips, and candy bars.  The 4-H Pizza Hut stand continues to serve from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 to 8:30 p.m.
