Special Announcement about SeeFreeNews.com!!
by Keith Bardell
Well, here it is, July 2010. How quickly it has arrived! My name is Keith Bardell and as the Owner/Publisher of SeeFreeNews.com I wanted to share a sneak peak, or rather let you in on what is going on at SeeFreeNews.com. The new website is in the works. We will provide you with a great new, multi-functioning website that will be more user friendly, and we will have more EXCLUSIVE stories, shows, and video to bring to you. I will, in the next few weeks, be announcing and introducing all of our new staff. We now have a web designer, a new salesperson, and a new intern journalist. It has taken a while, but it is all coming together.
I didn't think it fair not to give some hint of what is coming up. The reason is: This website has outgrown its functionality. Starting July 1, you will see pieces and pages of this site disappear. We are starting the task of archiving all of the work done so far, and it will be stored for posterity. We will have a new official launch of the "New SeeFreeNews.com" in just a few weeks. Please be patient as we spend time saving our previous work, and begin the task of starting the site over. We will stick to our same principles: The Happy News and Local Events." We will also begin to cover the "hard-copy" news, and politics. SeeFreeNews.com is also a proud member of The Freeport Area Chamber of commerce, and without their support in our start-up, none of this would have been possible.
THANK YOU soooo much for your great support through the uphill battle to start a new business. Rest assured, we will continue to support the Freeport area, and ask for all of your story ideas to be sent to : editor@SeeFreeNews.com. Thank you so much, and please spread the word about us and please continue to view the site during our transition, and please pardon any dust while we clean house and start fresh with the new site. Dear Editor: While we were working, something happened to our country.
When I grew up in the 50’s life seemed so carefree. I guess a lot of that had something to do with being a dumb kid, with no responsibilities. We went to the small country school with 27 kids and one school teacher located in the small town of Normandy, IL, just to the west of Walnut. In 1946 after W.W.2, our leaders had a decision to make on the economy. More of Bill Dietz's Letter to the Editor click here

Emergency Meeting of the Freeport City Council July 26, 2010
By Keith Bardell
Local tv news crews and news organizations, including SeeFreeNews.com, attended the Emergency Freeport City Council meeting on Monday July 26. Not in attendance, and noticeably absent, was anyone from FEMA. Discussed were the steps toward disaster relief that had already taken place, and solidifying the steps toward the clean-up.
“In about two weeks we should know what FEMA will do (for the flood victims.)” said Freeport Mayor George Gaulrapp.
Dumpsters will be placed in various locations throughout the city of Freeport over the next couple of weeks. The locations of the dumpsters will be posted daily on the city’s website, www.cityoffreeport.org. The locations will change daily, so residents are encouraged to check the website for current dumpster locations. Residents are asked not to put sofas or appliances in the dumpster, but rather along side or on the curb.
The assessment phase of the disaster Unified Command has begun and flood victims are asked to follow the following instructions to be included:
- Residents and business owners inside the City of Freeport please call 815-235-8200 between 8:30 and 4:30 M-F.
- Stephenson County residents and business owners (not in Freeport) please call 815-599-0344 M-F.
Callers will be asked to provide:
The address affected
Type of business (own,rent, etc.)
Depth of water in basement
Water on first floor
Living area in basement??
Insurance information
Structural damage
Contact phone number
Remember to also keep receipts, pictures or video of the damage. Residents who need assistance but don’t know who to call may call the Fire Department non-emergency number at 815-235-8222. Tetanus immunizations are available at the Health Dept. on 10 W. Linden, Freeport. Residents may also go to www.nixle.com to receive updates via phone/text messaging.
A few residents voiced their concerns at the council meeting, with one resident whom was also in the flooding that took place in 2007. Stacy Lien, of Freeport, says that she received assistance from FEMA the last time in about 90-120 days, but is worried about this time, since she is now a widow and has physical limitations that may hamper her ability to do much of the cleanup herself.
Residents may also call CONTACT of Northwestern Illinois at 815-233-4357, for questions about disaster assessment.
Now that the waters have receeded, the cleanup begins. Butts and Booze is open for business as of Monday July 26th. The interior of the Save-A-Lot grocery store is in complete shambles.

U of I Extension Program, Living on the Land, Comes to Winnebago County
A new University of Illinois Extension program, Living on the Land, comes to Northern Illinois. Living on the Land is a 13-week course designed to help small-acreage landowners manage their land and become good stewards of their property and the environment by conserving natural resources and protecting water quality.
Many Northern Illinois residents live in rural communities. Many of these residents own small tracts of land that may be too large for simple lawns yet too small to farm. Consequently, some owners aren’t sure how to best utilize the extra space. Living on the Land is designed to help these individuals inventory their resources, explore potential income opportunities, and develop realistic goals to determine the best use for their acreage.
U of I Extension Educators will team up with local environmental policy professionals to teach classes on soils, wells and septic systems, local laws and regulations, water quality, streams and ponds, lawn management, pastures and managed grazing systems, animal husbandry, wildlife conservation and concerns, marketing and economics, sustainability and much more.
Living on the Land will be held every Wednesday afternoon from 3 to 6:00 PM at Lockwood Park Trailside Equestrian Centre and Children’s Farm, beginning August 25th and ending November 17th, 2010. The course costs $250 per person ($310 per couple) for Winnebago County residents, $300 per person ($375 per couple) for non-Winnebago County residents. To register, visit http://web.extension.illinois.edu/winnebago or call Living on the Land program coordinator, Jackie de Batista, at (815) 986-4357 for more information.

Emerald Ash Borer
URBANA – Tree and insect specialists are on the lookout for infestations of the emerald ash borer. University of Illinois entomologist Jim Appleby can identify the pest and the tell-tale D-shaped holes it leaves exiting an infested tree and wanted to make identification easier for non-entomologists. He created a four-page colored leaflet with extensive close-up photos that help people know what to look for.
“We get calls every year from homeowners and park officials asking if the pest in their tree is indeed the emerald ash borer,” Appleby said. “I have lots of photos of the insect and the damage it can do to a tree, so I combined them along with some simple information into an 8-1/2 by 11-inch 4-page full-color leaflet.”
The publication called “How to Diagnose, Detect, and Search for Infestations of the Emerald Ash borer” can be purchased for $2.00 each. A printable order form is available by visiting http://nres.illinois.edu/Appleby_Emerald_Ash_Borer or by contacting Carla Chapman (217-333-2770; carlac@illinois.edu). A discount is offered for orders of more than 100 copies.
“Some cities purchase several copies to use in their municipal areas to educate residents, and to display at their public works and park departments,” Appleby said. “It’s a great reference tool to laminate and send out with field crews.”
The emerald ash borer beetle is a bright, metallic, emerald green color; about half an inch long, has a bullet-shaped body; and makes exit holes in bark shaped like the letter "D."
Although the tiger beetle, ground beetle and some bees and wasps are mistaken for the emerald ash borer because of their similar green color, these other borers make an oval or round exit hole. The "D" shape is distinctive.
Insecticides containing imidacloprid have proven to be effective in preventing the ash borer from taking up residence in ash trees. The only brand currently available to homeowners is Bayer Advanced Garden Tree and Shrub Insect Control. Others can be professionally applied.
Some areas in Illinois are now quarantined. It is unlawful to transport firewood from such quarantined areas. Appleby stressed the best way to prevent the beetle from spreading to new locations is to avoid transporting firewood. Campers should only purchase firewood produced near their campsite.

4-H Annul Horse Show
By: Brehanna Smith
On Monday July 12, 4-H held their annual horse show at the Stephenson County Fairground. This show was not just open to Freeport members, but also to those from surrounding areas such as: Pearl City, Dakota, and Orangeville. Participating were 21 4-H’ers, ranging from ages 9-18, and 35 horses, donkeys, and mules. The first class entered the ring at 9:30am.
Being young wasn’t the biggest challenge some of the 4-H’ers had. Melinda Borgman showed and planned to ride her mother’s horse, Thunder Rolls, while in a wheelchair. This was her first year showing this horse. Borgman said she was born with her legs not useable. When she showed her horse she had the reigns in one hand and controlled her wheelchair with the other. Talk about inspiration!
Montana Hughes won second place in showmanship with her horse Buddy. This was her first show after a three year break. Allissa Dehaven, with her horse Duece, came in sixth in the same class as Hughes and Buddy.
The struggles some of these ladies had couldn’t begin to be explained, controlling a half ton animal isn’t easy especially in a wheelchair, the patience and determination these 4-H members was evident during the show.
