Local Foods Conference Features Author and Local Foods Advocate Terra Brockman
Rockford, Ill. -- One Good Turn: Connecting with Local Foods and Doing a World of Good
Local Foods Conference keynote speaker Terra Brockman has walked the talk. Author of the recently released book, The Seasons on Henry’s Farm, Brockman will share her experience and observations at the upcoming Local Foods Conference on Saturday, May 20, 2010 from 8:30 am – 1:30 pm. The conference, coordinated by the University of Illinois Extension and the Winnebago County Local Foods Working Group, will be held at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, 1601 Parkview Avenue, Rockford. Conference partners are Angelic Organics Learning Center and the Winnebago County Office of Regional Planning and Economic Development.
The Seasons on Henry’s Farm takes the reader through the many “micro-seasons” on her brother Henry’s sustainable, extremely diverse vegetable farm in central Illinois. Part farm journal, part memoir, this story of a five-generation Illinois farming family takes readers from the soil to the supper table through 52 meditative, closely observed “seasons” on a sustainable farm, accented with culinary, historical, scientific, and literary reflections and culminating with a bounty of foolproof, fresh-flavored seasonal recipes. Terra herself has been very involved with many aspects of the farm and her book relates those experiences. As a member of a remarkable farming family, Terra is a nuanced observer of, and gifted writer and speaker about sustainable agriculture. Terra is also the founder of The Land Connection, an educational nonprofit involved in beginning farmer training. Her website is www.terrabrockman.com. “I have worked with Terra on programs throughout the state, and am very pleased to have her be part of this conference,” states Margaret Larson, County Director for U of I Extension. “Terra has a thoughtful, powerful message to share, and judging from the book, she will reach out to a wide audience in our area.”
Following the keynote, participants will attend three breakout sessions which feature local experts on a variety of related topics. For example, The ABC’s of Food Preservation will be presented by U of I Extension Master Food Preservers Constance McCarthy and Jeff White. The Farmer and the Chef will feature local restaurant owner Kiki Benson describe how she sources local food and farmer David Cleverton of Kinnickinnick Farm will discuss growing for the restaurant industry. Other topics featured will be The 100 Mile Diet; Meat, Your Farmer and Your Butcher and sustainable vegetable gardening. A growers panel will allow participants to learn about various local farm business models and what lies in the future for the local food system in the area.
Local related businesses will have informational booths at the conference, and a lite lunch featuring local food will be served. Cost per person is $15.

Northern Illinois Metal Finishing Announces New Hydrographics Capability
Rockford, Ill. --- Northern Illinois Metal Finishing has added a hydrographics water transfer process to its finishing capabilities, giving customers the ability to provide more unique, custom finishes to any water-resistant product that accepts paint. This includes almost any goods that can hold their shape after water immersion, such as plastics, woods, metals, and more. The company is the only provider of this service in the greater Rockford area.
Over 40 different patterns are available in-house, along with ten base-coat paints and both matte and gloss finishing coats. Popular patterns include camouflage, wood grain, marble, stone, carbon fiber, diamond plate, patriotic, skull, animal prints, and many more.
Hydrographics are sought out by individuals and industries to respond to the personalization trend, giving end-users the ability to showcase their personalities or preferences in distinctive ways. Examples of products made unique through hydrographics include hunting equipment and paraphernalia like guns, bows, and skulls; vehicle products such as helmets, motorcycles, snowmobiles, car dashboards, and steering wheels; and commercial items like fan blades, light switches and plates, door handles, phones, mugs, and stereo covers. The possibilities are nearly endless, since custom designs are possible.
According to Kris Beach, Northern Illinois Metal Finishing’s professional hydrographics manager, “We received our equipment and training from Liquid Print in Tyler, Texas, known as pioneers in the hydrographics industry. Our equipment and processes are all leading-edge, giving our customers the most up-to-date looks available at affordable rates. We are especially excited to work with car clubs and sportsmen, as we have seen exceptional results in those areas.”
Both small and large volume orders are welcome; pricing is determined by the size, shape, and detailed specifications of products as well as the desired pattern. Quotes are available by calling Kris Beach at Northern Illinois Metal Finishing, 815-965-9655, by e-mail at kkbeach@noilmf.com, or via the website at www.noilmf.com.
Northern Illinois Metal Finishing is one of the nation’s largest platers of hexavalent-free black chromate. The company specializes in rack and barrel plating using numerous finishes and finishing processes. The Vagina Monologues Set to Open in Freeport
by Keith Bardell
A V-Day benefit performance of the Vagina Monologues opens on Saturday March 6 at the Winneshiek Playhouse in Freeport. This is the second year this play has been performed at the theater.
There are 13 actresses in the play, with two returning from the previous performance. Last year she was an actress in the play. This year Tana Gundry takes over as director.
“I get the opportunity not to be singularly focused on my monologue,” says Gundry. “It comes together as a whole piece, not as individuals.”
Gundry explains that the play also brings the issues to the community about domestic violence. All of the actors are volunteers and all proceeds benefit VOICES DV. She also feels that the play isn’t about acting, it’s about telling those women’s stories and having the audience get to know the women and form relationships with them.
“People of all ages latch onto it and find the human and heart in it,” said Gundry.
There are two performances scheduled. For more info click on the link below.

United States Census 2010 - 10 Questions, 10 Minutes to Complete
With one of the shortest questionnaires in history, the 2010 Census asks for name, gender, age, race, ethnicity, relationship, and whether you own or rent your home. It takes only about 10 minutes for the average household to complete. Questions about how we live as a nation - our diversity, education, housing, jobs and more - are now covered in the American Community Survey, which is conducted every year throughout the decade and replaces the Census 2000 long-form questionnaire. Responses to the 2010 Census questionnaire are required by law. All responses are used for statistical purposes only, and all are strictly confidential.
Census Forms Begin Arriving in Mailboxes March 15
Each question helps to determine how more than $400 billion will be allocated to communities across the country.
For more information, visit the 2010 Census Web site at http://2010.census.gov/2010census/

HCC’s Coach Norman to be inducted into to the NJCAA Hall of Fame
FREEPORT – Highland Community College Athletic Director and former men’s basketball coach, Pete Norman, has been selected to be inducted into the National Junior College Athletics Association Region IV Hall of Fame, class of 2010.
Norman led the men’s basketball team from 1994 to 2009, accumulating a career total 395 wins and 5 berths to the National Tournament in his last 6 years; 11 consecutive Arrowhead championships, including 69 straight conference victories and six straight region titles.
Norman’s Cougars made it into the national record books for the longest winning streak (29 wins) in the nation in 2003-2004. Coach Norman has been named Illinois Basketball "Coach of the Year" 5 times; Region IV "Coach of the Year" 7 times, and Arrowhead Conference "Coach of the Year" 13 times.
Even though Norman built the Highland program into a national powerhouse, he has always been known for his humility and appreciation for the unparalleled following and support from Cougar Nation, Highland’s loyal fan base.
In addition to his successes on the court, he is most proud of his student-athletes’ accomplishments in the classroom. As an advocate for higher education, Norman inspired his student-athletes to reach their goals-both athletically and academically. Over 90% of Highland's men's basketball players have graduated and transferred to Universities and colleges throughout the United States during his tenure. Several former players are competing professionally.
Reflecting on Norman’s years as head coach, Joe Kanosky said, “The College is very proud of his 15 seasons as coach. Pete came to Highland at a time when the program was in need of revitalization and he surely accomplished that goal. Most importantly, Pete set a precedent that academics matter. He is most respected by the College community for his commitment to helping his players be good students and citizens as well as excellent athletes.”
Norman will be formerly inducted and presented with the NJCAA plaque on March 6th during the Men’s Region IV Championship Game in the Larry F. Kahl Gymnasium on the HCC campus.

Public speaking remains one of the greatest fears in humanity.
We become overwhelmed by who’s in the audience, what to say in our script, what to show on the screen, where to stand, how to move our hands, how to use a microphone, and whether or not we’re going to look stupid when it’s finally over.
Learn how to simplify your approach to presenting to ensure your message is delivered with energy and influence.

FHN Offering Treatment for Heavy, Irregular Periods
FREEPORT, Ill., Women who deal with heavy or irregular periods can find relief through a simple procedure now offered at FHN.
The OB/GYN physicians at FHN offer the NovaSure endometrial ablation procedure for patients who have completed childbearing and are looking for an alternative to hysterectomy to deal with heavy or irregular periods. The procedure is non-invasive and performed on an outpatient basis at FHN Memorial Hospital.
“The patient is under general anesthesia, so there is no discomfort during the procedure, which takes approximately 30 minutes to perform,” said Nicolai Hinds, MD, FACOG. “She is free to go home the same day, and will miss just two to three days of work and activities, compared to 6 weeks or more of recuperation for a hysterectomy.”
NovaSure utilizes radiofrequency energy to permanently remove the lining of the uterus. More than 80 percent of patients experience a reduction in their periods after NovaSure; 40 percent experience no further periods after the procedure. While the procedure reduces the risk of future pregnancy, it is still possible to become pregnant. However, pregnancy after the procedure is very risky for both mother and fetus, and is not advised.
To make an appointment with Dr. Hinds or any of FHN’s OB/GYN providers, call FHN Family Healthcare Center – Harlem Avenue at 815-599-7750 or toll-free 877-538-0958. For more information about endometrial ablation and other services offered at FHN, visit www.fhn.org

Private Pesticide Safety Education Program & Testing Clinic Offered
The Illinois Pesticide Act requires individual farmers to become certified as a Private Pesticide Applicator in order to purchase and use restricted use pesticides (RUPs). These products will clearly state the words "Restricted Use Pesticide" on the label. Common examples include the insecticides Counter, Force, and Pounce, and the herbicides Atrazine, Gramoxone Max, and Harness.
To become certified, you must pass a closed-book, 50 question examination administered by representatives of the Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDA). Once passed, a three-year certification license will be issued by the IDA upon receipt of a $20 licensing fee. To help you prepare for the examination, the University of Illinois Extension offers Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP) clinics as well as a training manual and workbook. The manual was revised in 1999, and the workbook was revised in 2005. Use the manual as a reference to complete the workbook before attending a clinic.
The University of Illinois Extension-Stephenson County will host two Pesticide Safety Education Program Clinics this winter. The programs will be held at the Lena Community Center on Thursday, February 11, 2010 and on Friday, March 12, 2010. The clinics will run from 9 a.m. to noon and will be followed by a test that will be administered by the IDA. Please be advised that there is a $30 clinic fee and preregistration requirement.
