Mighty Richland Players, Orangeville Opens Death by Fatal Murder 9 SEP

Mighty Richland Players’ latest production, Death by Fatal Murder, by Peter Gordon, sees the less than triumphant return of the hapless "Defective" Inspector Pratt to solve yet more grisly goings-on at the now notorious Bagshot House. Following MRP’s two previous installments over the past two autumns, Murdered To Death and Secondary Cause of Death, Death By Fatal Murder portrays the bumbling sleuth, again played by Josh Ryan, trying to get to the bottom of the mysterious disappearance of one of his own officers. He is helped, but more often hindered, in his enquiries by the eccentric inhabitants of the mysterious country manor house, as well as his trusty beat bobby, Constable Thomkins played by Drew Chelberg.

(Photos Supplied: 1. Bldowyn Morgan (center, Mary Jo Frederick) conducts a séance with Detective Inspector Pratt (Josh Ryan, left), and Miss Joan Maple (Sue Wichman). Photo 2. Pratt (Josh Ryan) discusses the case with his loyal assistant, Thomkins (Drew Chelberg).

FHN Sponsoring Free Saturday Walk-In Sports Injury Clinics

FHN is offering free evaluations of sports- and fitness-related injuries at a series of weekly walk-in clinics held Saturday mornings in the Orthopaedics department at FHN Family Healthcare Center – Burchard Hills in Freeport. No appointment is required for these free evaluations by clinic staff of fitness- and sports-related injuries. Any necessary x-rays, supplies or follow-up visits will be charged accordingly. Healthcare providers will be available from 8 to 9 a.m. Saturdays August 27 through October 22 to examine fitness-related injuries such as minor sprains. (The clinic will be closed Sept. 3 for Labor Day weekend.) “Student athletes in our area take physical conditioning and getting ready for their sport very seriously,” said FHN Athletic Training Team Leader Emily Giglio, MS, ATC/LAT, NCTMB, LMT. “If an athlete turns an ankle or is experiencing some soreness, we can help ease his or her mind with an examination to determine the extent of the injury. If it’s a sprain or strain and all you need is ice and some rest, you can be on your way out pretty quickly. If we feel it could be a more serious injury, you’re in the right place for further evaluation.”  For more information on FHN’s Saturday Walk-In Sports Injury Clinics, visit www.fhn.org or call the FHN Orthopaedics department at 815-599-7730.

Family-to-Family Program Helps Families of People with Mental Illness

FHN Family Counseling Center and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) are sponsoring an educational program for family members of adults with mental illness.
NAMI Northwestern Illinois, an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is offering in Freeport its Family-to-Family Education Program, a 12-week course taught by trained family members that focuses on educating and supporting those who care for loved ones with bipolar disorder, major depression, borderline personality disorder, schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder or co-occurring brain disorders and addictive disorders. The first Family-to-Family session is scheduled for 6:30 – 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15 at St. John United Church of Christ, 1010 S. Park Avenue in Freeport. The free classes are structured to help family members understand and support a mentally ill relative while maintaining their own well-being. There is no cost to participate in the program – all class materials for each session will be provided free of charge by NAMI.
“These classes offer information, insight and empowerment to the families of people with mental illnesses,” FHN Family Counseling Center Clinical Leader Jennifer Aurand, PsyD, said.  The curriculum for the course was written by an experienced family member and mental health professional and is designed specifically for parents, siblings, spouses and adult children and significant others of persons with severe and persistent mental illness. The course is not appropriate for individuals who themselves suffer from one of the major mental illnesses.  The Family-to-Family Education Program is offered by NAMI in 45 states, the District of Columbia, two provinces in Canada and in Mexico. More than 115,000 family members in the U.S. and Canada have completed the course.  Registration is required to attend the course, and class size is limited. For more information or to register, call Rosemary or Sam Havens at 815-821-1581.

HCC Adult Education program seeks volunteer tutors

Highland Community College Adult Education Program is seeking volunteers to tutor adults in Highland’s district.  Volunteers tutor math, reading, writing or English as a Second Language.  All interested individuals are encouraged to attend one of the tutor informational meetings at the Freeport Public Library in a main floor meeting room.
Informational meetings are as follows: Thursday, September 15, 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.,
Friday, September 23, 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 27, 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Each informational meeting will address the following questions. What does a volunteer tutor do? How much time does it take? What experience do I need?  The support and encouragement that tutors provide is a key influence in the lives of students.  In fact, students achieve more when they have individual instruction.  Just by volunteering an hour or two a week, tutors are a source of inspiration.  The rewards are not only for the students; this program is rewarding for the volunteers as well.  Volunteer tutors help their communities by improving the lives of residents, one person at a time.  Volunteers tutor when it is convenient – morning, afternoon or evening and in an academic subject area they enjoy.  For more information about these meetings, please contact Esther Mayer at 815-599-3538 or at esther.mayer@highland.edu

E-Reader Demonstration at Freeport Library

Thinking of getting an e-reader but not sure how it works? Swing by the library Saturday, September 17, anytime between 9:30 a.m. and noon, for a free demonstration of the NOOK e-reader from Barnes & Noble.  It is an opportunity to learn all about the NOOK and how to download library e-books at no charge using it or another e-reader. Freeport Library has joined Online Media of Northern Illinois (OMNI), a consortium of 47 other libraries in our shared online catalog, PrairieCat.  Individuals with Freeport Library cards will immediately have access to the nearly 2,000 titles already purchased by other members of OMNI.  Think of it as another feature of PrairieCat, which already enables Freeporters to borrow books from other libraries. Most e-book readers, including the Sony product, iPads, and iPhones, Android, and other smart phones are compatible with the OverDrive products, but not the Kindle.  Not yet.  The good news is that Kindle compatibility is in the works.  Expect it before the end of the year. In the meantime, Barnes & Noble is promoting their product, the NOOK, which comes in a black and white and a color version, and the company is willing to come to Freeport at no charge to provide a demo of NOOK, which works with the free titles available through the library. Having Barnes & Noble here enables people to experiment with an e-reader, without going into a retail store, and compare it to an actual book.  The demo will also show how to download free library e-books.
