Book Signing, Live Music and Shopping
Holiday Market Held Oct. 24 at DeSoto House Hotel
Galena, Ill.—What more could a local, or tourist, want but an indoor art fair that also features live music by Leonardo and a book signing by Sandra Principe? Hello Galena, an artist co-op, is hosting its annual Holiday Market inside the ballroom at the DeSoto House Hotel on Oct. 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and it’s free and open to the public.
There will be over 15 different local artists selling new items, including gift items and holiday décor. “We will have a variety of jewelry items, from sterling silver to beaded items and children’s jewelry. There will also be art from well-known and budding artists, such as Charlene Buran Price and Casey Folks. And as an extra plus, many of the artists will be holding discounts on their work,” Kimberley Poe-Jensen, coordinator of the event and manager of Hello Galena, said.
A sneak peek at the event offers: painted rock animals by Jacquie Dyrke, handmade wooden and corncob pens by Grant Barlow, wooden toys by Russell Vestuto, hand-knitted scarves made with fine, imported yarn by Helen Mayberry, hand-woven baskets by Toni Klingler and Sandy Michalik, hand-felted “Heirloom Mittens” by Susan Brusch, handmade cards, fused glass items by Northwest Designs, handmade, natural lotions, bath sprays and oil diffusers by Sweet Sensations. “In fact, Arlene Ehtessabian, owner of Sweet Sensations, will be offering body scrubs for the first time ever. And she will give free samples for people to try until supplies run out,” Poe-Jensen said.
Sandra Principe, a well-known local artist, will also be selling her paintings and doing book signings. She has written a four-book Galena murder mystery series, and has a new book out titled, “Murder at Galena Gallery.” Principe will sign her new book from 9-10:30 a.m. and again at 1:30 to 3 p.m.

FHN Presenting Cardiac Care Day
FREEPORT, Ill., October 6, 2009 — Join FHN cardiologists for a panel discussion on the latest in heart health at a special FHN Speakers Series presentation Wednesday, Oct. 21 at FHN Family Healthcare Center – Burchard Hills.
The panel discussion, led by FHN cardiologists Madhu Malladi, MD; Bhadresh Patel, MD; and Prasad Kilaru, MD, FSCAI, FACC from 6 to 7 p.m. will focus on the latest developments in heart health, from prevention of heart disease to the advanced technology available for diagnosis and treatment.
Before the panel discussion, join us for a special offering of blood pressure screenings and information on heart health topics including diet, exercise and more. Autumn Joys of Gardening
The University of Illinois Extension-Stephenson County Master Gardeners will be hosting their annual fall gardening program. Autumn Joys of Gardening: The Crafty side of Gardening will be held at the Freeport Public Library on Saturday, October 24 from 8 a.m. to Noon. Autumn Joys of Gardening is a hands-on gardening program featuring a keynote address followed by two breakout sessions. Each breakout session offers two classes in which you will make a garden related project.
The opening session will be presented by Barb Curry, Family Nutrition Program Coordinator, University of Illinois Extension-Stephenson County. Barb will demonstrate how to turn fall produce into delicious, nutritious meals that our entire family will enjoy. Samples and recipes will be included.
During the first breakout session participants will be able to choose from “Dried Flowers” or “Scrapbooking Your Garden”. In the “Dried Flowers” session participants will learn the process of drying flowers, weeds, herbs and gourds and how to use them once they are preserved. A dried flower project will be made by the participants. In “Scrapbooking Your Garden” participants will be able to make a small scrapbook of garden photos. Participants are asked to bring some of their garden photos (5-20), all other materials will be provided.
The second session features a choice between “Flower and Fall Vegetable Painting” or “Forcing Bulbs for Winter Containers”. In “Flower and Fall Vegetable Painting” participants will be taught the steps involved with painting flowers and fall vegetables. Participants will be able to paint their own creations on note cards. In “Forcing Bulbs for Winter Containers” the presenters will cover the basics of forcing bulbs such as the best bulbs for forcing, the time tables for forcing, and the proper care for bulbs being forced. Participants will be able to put together a pot of bulbs to force and enjoy this winter.

Holiday Art Fair to be Held at DeSoto House
Galena, Ill.-- Hello Galena, an artist co-op that sells only local art and gifts, is holding its annual Holiday Art Fair at the DeSoto House Hotel. “We were going to skip the event this year, but decided to hold it at the last minute due to increased interest,” Kimberley Poe-Jensen, manager, said. There will be many booths set up for indoor shopping and there will be some live entertainment.
The event will be held at the DeSoto House Hotel’s ballroom on Main Street from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. “It’s an easy walk into the hotel to get to the Holiday Art Fair, so I hope everyone will check it out,” she said.
There will be over 15 vendors from the area who will be selling various art and gift items. Sandra Principe, a well-known local artist, will also be selling her paintings and doing book signings. She has written a four-book Galena murder mystery series, and has a new book out titled, “Murder at Galena Gallery.” Principe will sign her new book from 9-10:30 a.m. and again at 1:30 to 3 p.m.
“This is truly the best place to buy a unique gift for someone,” said Poe-Jensen. “That’s what Hello Galena is all about—local and unique items that no one else has. So, we are excited to open this event to people from the area.”
The Holiday Market will feature all-natural lotions, jewelry, hand-woven baskets, wooden and corncob pens, hand-felted mittens, sterling silver jewelry, original art, hand-blown and fused glass, and much more.
As an added bonus, local musician and Latin guitarist Leonardo will perform in the ballroom from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. “We hope visitors and locals will stop by and enjoy the beautiful music by Leonardo. He is truly a talented man,” Poe-Jensen said.
