Fall and Halloween Celebrated at the Visitors Center

The Freeport/Stephenson County Visitors Center is celebrating the autumn season with the "Haunted Happenings" Expo featuring displays and information about the fall and Halloween activities in Stephenson County. The Expo features a Haunted House, compliments of the "ghoul-ish" designers of the Old Haunted Mill in Orangeville and the Haunted Barn in Lena. In order to give visitors a preview of these Halloween attractions, which are among the most popular in Northwest Illinois, the Mill and Barn organizers have recreated their haunted experiences, although on a much smaller scale, at the Visitors Center, complete with some scares, a haunted maze, as well as a surprise or two – all inside the Center. Huron Garden and Farm Market located on Highway 20 in Eleroy has again decorated the Center for fall and are offering pumpkins, gourds and more for sale at the Center. There is also a variety of information on other Halloween and fall activities in the area including the Trail of Terror which features events, haunted attractions, pumpkin patches and more across Northwest Illinois. Copies of the Stephenson County Fall Driving Tours are available at the Expo. This guide offers scenic self-guided tours through the county. The tours include museums, parks, restaurants, shops and lodging as well as scenic areas that are ideal spots to view the fall colors. All tours begin at the Freeport/Stephenson County Visitors Center. According to Connie Sorn, Executive Director of the Visitors Bureau, "Fall is one of the best times to visit our part of Illinois, and lots of our visitors want to get off the main highways and discover the beauty and charm of our back roads. The Fall Tours were developed with those travelers in mind". The "Haunted Happenings" Expo will be on display through October 31. The Visitors Center, located at 4596 US Highway 20 east of Freeport, is open daily from 8 am to 6 pm. Funded by private donations, the Center is designed to promote economic growth in Freeport and Stephenson County. Further information may be obtained by contacting the Visitors Center at 815-233-1357.

FHN Offering Seasonal Flu Shot Clinics

FHN will offer seasonal flu shots to the public again this year at a series of clinics scheduled throughout northwest Illinois. This year, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is recommending “universal vaccination,” including everyone 6 months of age and older. The clinics will follow CDC guidelines regarding eligibility for the vaccine, and will depend upon the availability of the vaccine. The FHN flu shots are $25 cash or check payable to FHN. This price applies only to immunizations available at these sites; other rates may apply in FHN provider offices. You will have no out-of-pocket expense if you are covered by a Medicare HMO accepted by FHN – there will be a list available at each flu shot clinic. If you are covered by an accepted Medicare HMO, you must present that HMO card instead of your Medicare card for billing purposes. If you are covered by Medicare Part B, please present your Medicare card. Because of federal guidelines to prevent identity theft, you must present a photo ID to receive an immunization. Children can only be immunized if a written prescription from a physician indicating dosage is presented. Persons with allergy to eggs or the flu vaccine, those with an illness accompanied by a fever or depressed immune system should not receive the flu immunization at these locations. For more information, visit www.fhn.org.
