May is Stroke Awareness Month – Do You Know the Signs of Stroke?
FREEPORT, Ill., — A stroke is a stop in the flow of blood to the brain due to a blood clot or broken blood vessel. A stroke, sometimes called a “brain attack,” is a medical emergency, and every minute of delay can mean brain cells lost.
FHN would like to help make the public aware that May is National Stroke Awareness Month. Tracy Love, RN, BSN, the stroke program coordinator at FHN, offers the public a variety of stroke educational opportunities from informational brochures to an educational speaker available to talk to clubs, church groups and other interested parties.
“Modern medicine can do so much to lessen and even reverse the effects of stroke, but treatments are based on time, and every minute counts,” Love said. “If you think you or a person you love is having a stroke, don’t wait – get him or her to the emergency room immediately! The symptoms of stroke include:
· Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg (especially on one side of the body)
· Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech
· Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
· Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
· A sudden severe headache with no known cause.
“There is a simple way to help remember the symptoms of a stroke,” Love said. “Just remember that you have to Act F.A.S.T.:”
Face – Does one side of the person’s face droop? Ask the person to smile to get an idea of whether his or her face is drooping.
Arm – Is one of the person’s arms weak and numb? Ask the person to raise both of his or her arms. Does one arm drift downward?
Speech – Is the person’s speech slurred? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Can he or she repeat it correctly?
Time – If a person shows any of these symptoms, call 9-1-1 or get to the hospital immediately!
For more information about stroke or stroke care at FHN, contact Stroke Program Coordinator Tracy Love, RN, BSN at 815-599-7510.
