Northwest Illinois Writing Conference to be held in Stockton

The first annual Northwest Illinois Writing Conference will be held on Saturday, June 18th at the Stockton Library from 1-4:30 p.m.
Lyle Ernst will be one of two featured speakers. His topic will be, "Writing from everyday life." The subject will include tips for developing your writing; how to form beginnings and endings; proofreading and self-editing; and active voice versus passive voice.
Ernst is an editor and freelance writer from Davenport, Iowa. As a journalist, he’s written for several newspapers in Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois. Along with contributing essays for several books, he’s also written articles for numerous magazines including Our Iowa. He’s the resident editor for Visionary Publishing, a company who provides editing and publicity services for both self-published and traditionally published writers. He’s helped writers improve their work and get their writing ready for the submission process.
Kim Sigafus of Warren will be speaking on the ins and outs of traditional publishing versus self-publishing. Having gone both directions, she’s a wealth of information including the pros and cons of each publishing route. She’ll be there to answer questions, and guide writers in the right direction for their work.
Sigafus is an award-winning freelance writer and photographer, originally from Minnesota. She’s written several books, and is currently working on an eight-book fiction series with Ernst. Their book, “The Life and Times of the Ojibwa People” was released in January.
“We look forward to having the conference in Stockton,” says Sigafus. “I’ve met a lot of writers in this area in the last year, and it will be fun to gather them all together for an enjoyable writing day.”
Participants will be encouraged to bring their work to share during small group time. In addition, a fun group writing exercise is scheduled.
The cost for the conference is $35. Pre-registration is required. High school and college students are also encouraged to attend. You can have a registration form sent to you by e-mailing qsouls@hotmail.com, or calling (608) 330-3463. The deadline to register is Friday, June 17th.

Give the Gift of Life at FHN Blood Drive

FREEPORT, Ill., June 7, 2011 — As summer activities ramp up and people become busier, the need for blood doesn’t decrease. The Rock River Valley Blood Center must collect more than 1,000 units of blood each week to meet the needs of the eight hospitals it serves, including FHN and all three Rockford hospitals.
You can help fill the need. FHN and the Rock River Valley Blood Center are holding a day-long blood drive at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport on Monday, June 20.
The drive will run from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Globe and Deaconess rooms on the hospital’s lower level, and is open to the public. Appointments are encouraged; please call 815-599-6214 for more information or to set up an appointment to donate. Walk-ins will be accepted as well.
“Rock River Valley Blood Center supplies all of the blood and blood products for our patients,” said Judith Otte, senior blood bank technologist at FHN and one of the organizers of the event. “Having a blood drive at the hospital makes it easy for FHN staff members to donate, and it’s a nice central location for the public to donate, too.”
Anyone in good health, at least 17 years old (or 16 years old with parental consent) and at least 100 pounds can donate blood every 56 days. Donors should bring a photo ID and have plenty to eat and drink the day they plan to donate.
For more information on donating blood, visit the Rock River Valley Blood Center’s Web site at www.rrvbc.org. For more information on the June 20 blood drive, visit www.fhn.org.

Donors can bring new and gently used books – hard or soft cover – to the parking lot of Freeport Lincoln, 1265 West Galena, Freeport, IL

Volunteers will greet donors at their cars, unload the books, and provide a receipt.

Secondly, VOICES Book Nook will celebrate its second anniversary as a retail used book store on Thursday, June 30, 2011.  It was two years ago on that date that VOICES opened its used book store in the Freeport Lincoln Mall.

“Our success is due to the countless hours devoted to VOICES Book Nook by our volunteers,” said Laurie Gungel, Book Nook Manager.  “They are awesome!”

“And the continued purchases by our friends and neighbors throughout our region enable VOICES to continue to serve its clients, even in these times of unstable government funding,” said Anita Rumage, Executive Director of VOICES DV.  “The funds from book sales are so important.”

Patrons are invited to stop by the Store on Thursday, June 30 from 10 am to 4 pm for light refreshments.

For more information, please call 815-821-BOOK (821-2665).

FHN hosting Open House at the Leonard C. Ferguson Cancer Center

The public is invited to an open house at the FHN Leonard C. Ferguson Cancer Center from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 22. The center is located just west of FHN Memorial Hospital, at 1163 W. Stephenson Street in Freeport.  FHN Hematologist – Medical Oncologist Arshad Shaikh, MD and Radiation Oncologist Patrick Fernandes, MD will be present to answer questions about available treatments and expansion plans.  The Cancer Center has purchased and installed a new linear accelerator and four-dimensional (4D) CT scanner to bring the most advanced form of radiation therapy called VMAT – Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy, also called SmartArc or RapidArc therapy, to the Center. “This technology utilizes sophisticated imaging tools to localize and verify treatment delivery to the tumor site. This is more precise targeting for each and every treatment, taking into account daily changes in tumor motion and size,” said Dr. Fernandes. The Center’s new 4D CT scanner serves to make treatment more precise and easier on the patient. One of the biggest challenges for delivering high doses of radiation is taking into account the natural movement of internal organs and tumors. The new scanner covers the three dimensions of space (3D) and opens the door to this fourth dimension – internal motion. In the past, patients were required to have their treatment planning CT scans performed at the hospital. Now all steps of the planning process can be completed at the Cancer Center. The 4D technology can be programmed to deliver radiation by adapting to tumor motion during treatment. In conjunction with 4D imaging, VMAT will especially benefit patients with tumors in the chest and abdomen, where breathing motion can be an issue in targeting the treatment.  For more information on cancer care at FHN or the Cancer Center open house, visit www.fhn.org or call toll-free at 1-877-6000-FHN (1-877-600-0346).

Fehr-Graham Names New Executive Positions – Gronewold, Thompson, McKinley

On Monday, May 23, 2011, Fehr-Graham & Associates (FGA) Member Todd Weegens announced a series of executive level changes designed to strengthen and strategically lead the engineering and science consulting firm for years to come.

Mick Gronewold has been named Board Chairman effective immediately, replacing recently retired Member Hans Anderson.  Gronewold joined FGA in 1993 as an Engineer and rose quickly through the leadership ranks to become a Member in 2000.  He currently heads up the firm’s Engineering Services Division, responsible for projects in the private, commercial, industrial and governmental sectors.  Gronewold adds value to Fehr-Graham clients by excelling in client and project management, strategic planning, QA/QC, and bringing cost effective, reliable solutions to complex problems.  In his role as Board Chairman, Gronewold will preside at the quarterly board meetings, facilitate long range strategic planning efforts, and oversee implementation of the plan as adopted by the Members.

Ken Thompson has been named Managing Member effective immediately, replacing Principal Todd Weegens who is stepping out of the position after nearly 7 years. Thompson joined FGA in 1989, became a Principal in 2002, and currently heads up the firm’s Environmental Services Division.  Thompson has extensive experience in helping industrial and manufacturing facilities identify their environmental compliance obligations and set up necessary systems and procedures to ensure on-going compliance. Thompson’s organizational and leadership development skills will also serve the firm well as it establishes new long range growth plans.  As Managing Member, Thompson will oversee the firm’s administrative and operational functions and preside at the monthly Member meetings.

Meggon McKinley joined FGA as Chief Operating Officer on June 1, 2011. In this newly created position, McKinley is responsible for the daily operations management of the firm’s five office locations.  She will assume duties previously held by the Managing Member, ensuring the necessary systems, procedures, and people are in place to efficiently and effectively align with the firm’s updated long term strategies. She will also help the Members define that strategy.  McKinley holds a B.S. degree in Economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  She has nearly 20 years of management experience in the corporate financial and marketing industries, giving her an intricate understanding of strategic planning, corporate operations, and client expectations.  She also has 2 years of government leadership experience serving as Ogle County Administrator and Interim Rochelle City Manager.
