February 22-28, "WHAT'S NEW?" EXPO. Freeport/Stephenson County Visitors Center, 4596 US Highway 20 East, Freeport. Sunday thru Thursday: 8 am to 7 pm; Saturday and Sunday: 8 am to 8 pm. New businesses that have opened in Stephenson County in 2008 and 2009 are featured in this Expo at the Visitors Center. Despite a challenging economic environment, a number of new businesses from banks to mom and pops to franchise businesses, have opened their doors and the Expo give a little taste of these great new local businesses. Participants include Choice Reality, Citizens State Bank-Freeport, Slumberland, The Blue Orchid, and more. On Saturday, February 27, from 2 to 4 pm. Tae Kwon Do Rockford Academy
Tae Kwon Do teaches children to respect themselves and others and helps build a child’s self-esteem. The Rockford Academy is World Tae Kwon Do Federation Licensed, which means that each students belt level will be recognized anywhere in the world. This class is for youth ages 7 and older, and is held at the Read Park Pavilion beginning March 4 – April 29. Kahjok Tae Kwon Do Class
Freeport Park District will offer Kahjok Tae Kwon Do from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, beginning March 1st through April 28th at Read Park Pavilion. “The Dakota FFA will be hosting a Pork Chop Dinner on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at the Dakota High School.
The event will take place from 4:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria during the boys basketball game of Dakota vs. Lena Winslow.
The meal will include: Butterfly Pork Chop Sandwich, Au Gratin Potatoes, Applesauce, Dessert & Drink.

The Lectures in American History Series will begin its 2010 season with a presentation by Dr. Andy Dvorak, History Instructor at Highland Community College. “Making the World Safe for Democracy: U.S. Foreign Policy from Wilson to Afghanistan” will be the topic of Dr. Dvorak’s lecture, which will be held on Wednesday February 10 at 7:00 PM at the Freeport Public Library.
“Underappreciated Events that Shaped American History” will be the topic of Dr. Martin Quirk on Thursday, February 18. Dr. Quirk is a history professor at Rock Valley Community College, who specializes in social history.
The 2010 Series continues on Thursday, February 25 when George Buss’s topic will be “The 1860 Presidential Election." With or without the stovepipe hat, George Buss is recognized as Freeport's Lincoln. He portrayed Abraham Lincoln in the C-SPAN 1994 Lincoln-Douglas Debate Re-enactments in Freeport and again for the sesquicentennial celebration of the Debates as well has playing the role for civic and historical groups across the country.
James B. Winker's topic, "U.S. Presidents of the 1920s," will be presented on Thursday, Marcy 4. The series concludes with Dr. Edward Finch's presentation, "Run Silent, Run Deep: U.S. Submarines in the War Against Japan”
on Thursday, March 11. Mr. Winker and Dr. Finch have organized the series each year since its beginning in 2004.
The Lectures in American History Series is presented by the Freeport Public Library Foundation. All lectures begin at 7:00 PM and are open to the public free of charge. A question and answer session will follow each lecture.
