Local Authors to Autograph Books SAT, DEC 11, at Freeport/Stephenson County Convention and Visitors Center
Freeport: Just in time for Christmas, eight local authors will be present for book-signings from 11 AM to 1 PM on Saturday, DEC 11, at the Freeport/Stephenson County Convention and Visitors Bureau on Highway US 20. Some of these authors are known and loved by many and have had their books on the market for a year or more. These include Harriett Gustason, (Looking Back, Volumes 1, 2, and 3); Olga Carlile (Heritage Cookbook); Dr. Roland Toliver, (For Love of Community/Late Night Lattes and Midnight Musings); and Peg Bladgett, (Romancing the Bike). Four local authors have new books appearing on the market this year. A short review of the authors and their works follows: Beneath the Waves: The Life and Navy of CPT Edward L. Beach, Jr., Dr. Ed Finch. Dr. Finch is the executive director of the Stephenson County Historical Society. His book is the biography of CPT Edward Beach, the author of the classic movie, Run Silent, Run Deep, a story about the WWII US Navy submarine service. Hot Flashes, Sue Langenberg. A humor writer, Sue has written a weekly humor column for more than ten years in various newspapers, including Freeport iNK, often winning placement in HumorPress.com contests. In her book, Hot Flashes, she has compiled 100 timely examples that represent one goofy hag’s take on life using wry and sometimes edgy humor. She never forgot anything in her “Boomer” life that made her laugh, but rather stored it until the time was right. The stories begin as an ordinary observation of reality and rapidly turn into a wild ride full of laughs, all within some 600 words of wit that strike a chord with young, old, teen and like-hags. There is something to laugh about for everyone in her musings. Books may not be available at the signing, but the author will be present to discuss her work. From Chains to Change, Glenn Johnson. Glenn was born and raised in the suburbs outside Chicago, Illinois. He is a decorated Veteran of the Viet Nam Conflict, serving in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from the College of Dupage with an A.A. degree, majoring in sociology. He has been a policeman, fireman/Emergency Medical Technician, lineman and freight car repairman for the railroad, worked in fire and disaster restoration in northwestern part of Illinois until April of 2004. Glenn spent from April 30th 2004 through Aug.16th 2006 incarcerated in the Illinois Department of Correction. The book was created from letters written from January 1, 2005 thru December 31, 2005. The Author spent time in the segregation unit at Statesville Correctional for 6 months and it is through those experiences the idea for the book took shape, to give a first-hand account of that experience so others might have a greater insight. Glenn has three children and six grandchildren. He and his wife Carol are members and attend the First Church of the Open Bible, in Freeport Illinois. “I know that people might ask why they should read this book and what makes it different from other books. I can only answer by saying this is a book I wrote about coming to God through my thoughts and writings. The book gives the reader a little bit of what it was like inside prison walls, and what daily life holds for anyone who may end up here. I also have hope that men who are in prison might read this book and start to heal their pain and agony by going to God. Prison life is not easy and the one thing that is for sure is the loneliness, that no matter how tough we think we are we will still get lonely. I had a choice to be lonely or talk to someone I could count on to aid me in getting through my stay in prison. I chose to have God as my companion, my friend, and my comforter. I know that without God my time in prison would have been unbearable. I hope you will enjoy this journey of a lifetime.” Books may not be present at the signing, but the author will be present to discuss his work. Voyage of Folly, John Buford. A self-defined Renaissance man, John’s light-hearted tome is two books intertwined into one. This armchair adventure deals with his voyage in a small sailboat, appropriately named Folly, from Corpus Christi, TX, to Chicago, IL, between 2005 and 2009. Told along with this journey are his life experiences, beginning with his very early years on a farm outside Woodbine, IL, in Jo Daviess County; growing up in Orangeville, IL, heading into the much bigger world, and working in diverse professions, including his thirty-two years with the military and forty-one years of marriage. John currently resides in his hometown of Orangeville, IL, with his extremely forgiving wife. As Arlo Guthrie recently said about his wife, John is Caryl’s ticket to sainthood. The books will be available during the Holiday Expo which runs through January 9, 2011.All books will make excellent Christmas presents, as well as the other offerings during the Holiday Expo. : Photos, Sue Langenberg. Happy Holidays! The grapevines look beautiful against the white snow. And we’re enjoying hearing about everyone’s holiday events and seeing friends and family come home again. It’s such a wonderful time of year. Our new wine for the holidays is Fossil Rock Rose. It’s the first bottling of the 2010 vintage and is a delightful light wine with a hint of cherry and cranberry. Wineglass Painting will be held on Saturday, December 18 at 3:00. This has been so much fun as many of you have seen from the glasses on display. Create your own wineglass or make a special gift. We’ll have holiday designs for you to use, too. $10 includes the glass and the paints. There are limited seats so call ahead – 815-563-4665. We’ll have our 3rd Annual Christmas Celebration on Sunday, Dec. 19, noon to 5. There will be live music from 1-3, caroling and treats for everyone. Stop in and enjoy a moment at the Winery. Remember, wine makes a great present. And you can almost be certain it won’t be regifted! Here are some tips for serving wine at your party: 1 bottle of wine holds five 5 oz. glasses. If you are having a party of 10 people for a couple of hours, figure 2 glasses of wine per person. You will need 4-5 bottles of wine. For 30 people, you will need 12 bottles or a case of wine. Because alcohol is dehydrating, always have water or another non-alcohol beverage available at your party. And, (not that we Midwesterners need to be reminded), make sure you always serve plenty of food when you serve any alcohol. May you enjoy friends, family and this very special time of year! Ken & Pam Rosmann
