Green Fair Fare to be held at Woodbine Bend
The Green Fair Fare is coming to Woodbine Bend, August 19 at 5:30 p.m. Reservations are $30 per person and a cash bar will be available. Dinner will feature pork from Arnold’s Farm and other local produce; a vegetarian entrée is also available. The Green Fair Fare is sponsored by the University of Illinois Extension.
The Fare is always a chance for a bit of camaraderie, a time to think a bit about sustainability and a chance to look forward to the Green Fair. The dinner is also a small fundraiser for the very popular and successful recycling efforts in Jo Daviess County sponsored by the Jo-Carroll Solid Waste Agency and the U of I Extension, and to help defray the cost of the Green Fair itself.
The keynote speaker is C.E. Pugh, National Development Director for the National Cooperative Grocers Association (NCGA). Throughout his career he has developed and expanded conventional grocery stores as well as grocery cooperatives. In his current capacity with NCGA, Mr. Pugh is responsible for developing a subsidiary cooperative focused on supporting natural food co-op store & business development.
NCGA, founded in 1999, is a business services cooperative for retail food co-ops located throughout the United States. Their 120 members and associate co-ops operate over 150 storefronts in 33 states with combined annual sales of over 1.3 billion dollars. NCGA helps unify natural food co-ops in order to optimize operational and marketing resources, strengthen purchasing power, and ultimately offer more value to natural food co-op shoppers everywhere.
Many of the committee members involved with Green Fair are also studying the feasibility of opening a food co-op in Jo Daviess County. They have met and worked with Mr. Pugh and thought he’d be a perfect speaker.
“What’s a food co-op?” you ask. That’s exactly why he’s coming. Mr. Pugh will help us learn more about what a food co-op is, why it’s member-based and not profit-based, why it’s dedicated to food and produce that is locally, organically and sustainably grown. Food co-ops are growing at an exponential rate across the country, just as the local food movement is growing by leaps and bounds.
Save the date, mark your calendar, organize a table and send your check and reservations to University of Illinois Extension, 2998 W. Pearl City Road, Freeport, IL, 61032. Mighty Richland Players Celebrating Tenth Anniversary with Dinner Show AUG 5-7
In September, 2001, the Mighty Richland Players Dinner Theater, (MRPDT), 203 W. High Street, Orangeville, IL, opened its doors to sell-out crowds for its opening show, Escanaba in Da Moonlight. The brain-child of Ben Hoyle and John Buford, residents of this small town, the concept of a community theater was a way to make an old building in the historic downtown relevant to today, integrating its history of serving as the village’s first public forum with modern-day entertainment unique to the area.
In 2001, John and Ben reached out to an improvisational comedy group of extremely smart, young Highland Community students, who had formed a group calling themselves Countless Wasted Hours. Ben was one of the leaders of this group, so the choice seemed natural. After a five-year hiatus, Countless Wasted Hours is performing at MRP as part of the Ten Year Review.
During the first five years of the theater, most shows were written and performed by this phenomenally talented group. As they graduated from college, found jobs, got married, had children, and moved away, MRP proceeded down another avenue, focusing on more regional and older casts, and relying more on professional playwrights rather than home-written material. However, the theater has not strayed from its community theatre base.
Today the building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and still the home of the Orangeville Masons who constructed the building in 1877, seats 68 people as maximum capacity for its small auditorium. In addition to Countless Wasted Hours, actors and singers from shows from 2006-2011 will be performing skits and songs from these classics, including Little Red Schoolhouse, A Year with Frog and Toad, Radio Gals, Bosh and Moonshine, Belle of the Wabash, The Cheddar Curtain, and Sarah Bernhardt in Texas. On August 5-7, MRPDT celebrates ten continuous seasons of entertaining the local and regional folk.
Please join us for this wonderful opportunity to see some of your favorite cast members and relive some of the highlights of ten years of entertainment.
FRI, AUG 5/SAT, AUG 6: Doors open at 6:30 PM. Dinner at 7:00 PM, show follows.
Sunday matinee AUG 7: Doors open at noon. Dinner at 12:30, show follows.
